I spent 11 years at Yelp as their Small Business Expert and the host of Behind the Review (200+ episodes, 1.6M+ downloads), a podcast produced in partnership with Entrepreneur Media. In that time I interviewed hundreds of entrepreneurs, spoke at conferences across the country, and built a career around educating small business owners and amplifying their stories.

In October 2018, I had a manic episode and was hospitalized. A bipolar disorder diagnosis followed. And while that sounds like the part where everything falls apart … it wasn't. It was the part where I finally learned how to take care of myself. Within months of returning to work, I was promoted. My mental health journey didn't end my career. It made me better at it.

On November 10th, 2025 (my 11-year anniversary at Yelp to the day) I was laid off. My first reaction was fear. My second surprised me: clarity. For years I'd stayed because of the security. The stability. But the foundation I'd built since 2018 was strong enough to hold. And for the first time, I had the space to build something of my own.
